BPUG Awards

I thought I would share with you the official report of last week’s fabulous gala dinner. They also timed the speeches so that people didn’t get too cold while they presented or collected awards. This is a rare event in project management.

The Best Practice User Group Awards (BPUG) were presented last week at a gala dinner at London’s Millennium Gloucester Hotel. The beautiful glass awards were presented to OGC’s top management practitioners.
The awards were presented to Pete North, Strategic Director Manchester Improvement Programme, Sandra Lomax (BPUG Chair) and Richard Pharro (CEO The APM Group).
The Best Management Practice Partnership Award for Training Innovation was the first award. Maven Training won the award. Nominated by other Accredited Training Organisations, the award was won by Maven Training.
Sandra Lomax stated, “Maven Training enjoys an enviable record for quality and creativity. Their online delegate area offers a variety quizzes to suit different learning styles. Maven offers a flexible schedule that allows for evening, weekend and weekly events to fit different work and life styles. They are responsible for training the 200,000th PRINCE2 (r) candidate. Two of their promotional videos, Change Management and The Changes On PRINCE2(r), are available on You Tube. They are worthy recipients of this award.”
The award was collected by Melanie Franklin, CEO of Maven Training. She stated, “We are thrilled to win this award, especially in the category Innovation in Training. This ethos is at the core of Maven’s beliefs. Innovation is at the heart of everything we do. Not just product innovation, but also new ways of working, communicating with and supporting staff and delegates. Our success is based on encouraging and motivating employees to create ideas and then supporting them through delivery. We work together as a team and not as individuals. This is acknowledged by the BPUG community who voted for us. We want to thank them and all our delegates for being the heart of our course delivery and development.
The second award was the Best Management Practice Partnership Special Merit Award, which recognized individual contributions to the development of the guidance. Andy Murray, Director of Outperform Ltd, and Lead Author for the ongoing revisions of PRINCE2 (r) was nominated by fellow BPUG member.
Sandra stated that Andy was chosen by BPUG members to receive his award for his work developing PRINCE2r as well as his work in implementing it across a variety of organisations in a number countries. He is awarded the Special Merit Award for his individual contribution to the development of the guidance.
Andy collected his award and said that it was a complete surprise. If I had expected it, I would have worn an a tie. I hope that the new PRINCE2(r), as it is known, lives up to my expectations. Every effort is being made to make sure it does. It’s very rewarding to receive this award from your peers.
The International Special Envoy award of the year was the third. This was given to Eddie Borup in recognition of his guidance that was implemented in more than 150 countries. Before forming his own consulting business, Eddie was HeadofProjects at Cable and Wireless. His recent work with UN, which introduced PRINCE2(r), to developing countries, required him to travel significant distances from his family and home.
The fourth award was the Best Management Practice Partnership Honorary Award, which recognized outstanding contributions to the development of qualifications. Colin Bentley won this award.
Sandra stated, “After writing the lion’s share of the original PRINCE2r manual Colin “retired to his home office to writ.”
