White Paper Abstract It has been over three years since the last revision of the CompTIA Security+ exam back on May 1, 2014. The latest version, SY0-501 was released in fall 2017. The six domains of the revamped exam are the same as in SY0-401. This exam emphasizes security in three main areas: data, application, and host. Sample The CompTIA Security+ exam has been revised to emphasize best practices and concepts in risk management and mitigation. The domains have been re-ordered, renamed, and new topics account to about 30% of the material. Security professionals are more likely to perform direct, hands-on activities (i.e. Understanding and applying) is the main focus, with less emphasis on concept analysis. The exam is now primarily focused on entry-level concepts with an emphasis in application (Bloom’s Taxonomy Layer 3), rather than being focused on intermediate concepts with an emphasis upon analysis (Bloom’s Taxonomy Layer 4). CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst exam (CSA+) covers intermediate material and analysis. It is a good idea that you pay attention to the new topics and issues in SY0-501 as you prepare for it. A Global Knowledge Security+ training class will provide a detailed explanation of each topic. You can find the CompTIA Security+ Certification Objectives EXAM NUMBER SY0-501 here. The current version of SY0-501 can be downloaded, while the older version, SY0-401 will remain in use until July 2018, when it will be completely retired. The English version will be retired at the end of July. The English version will be retired in December 2018. CompTIA’s tradition of updating exam content every three years has led to the revision of this exam. CompTIA’s achieved certifications have a three year expiration. This makes sense. For the certification’s limited three-year life span, certification holders will need to either earn continuing education credits or take another exam in order to obtain the new version. Notable is the fact that the SY0-501 Security+ exam still includes performance-based questions. CompTIA uses the term “performance-based” to describe questions that require interaction, problem solving, concept application, or other forms of interaction. These questions go beyond simple multiple choice. Performance-based questions might include answering questions based on video, categorizing attacks or filling out a security device’s rule list. Steps can be placed in the correct order. Drag-and-drop security control labels into a network diagram. CompTIA has provided both a written description of performance-based questions and a video presentation. These can be accessed from the Security+ information page. Click on the Performance-based link in the Exam Details table. This white paper lists the differences between the SY0-401 exam and the SY0-501 exam, according to the official objective list. The list below contains all new items that are included in the objectives list of SY0-501 but were not in the SY0-401 list. Download
